Ribeirão da Ilha sits on the south bay coast, on the other side of the island from Campeche. It is a village of Azorean origin with preserved houses, an early 19th-century church and oyster farms in front of the water. It makes a half-day or late-afternoon outing. Here is what is worth knowing.

A slice of Azorean island life.

The district includes the historic village and other localities along the south bay shore.

Ribeirão da Ilha is described as the second-oldest district in Florianópolis, after Santo Antônio de Lisboa. The pace is small-village, with the calm bay in front and oysters as the trademark.

Historic village

The center has a group of Portuguese colonial-style houses around Praça Hermínio Silva and the church.

South bay shore

Several localities follow the shore along Rodovia Baldicero Filomeno, which runs right beside the water.

Oysters

The district is known for oyster farming. Many restaurants have their own farms or buy from neighboring producers.

Caieira da Barra do Sul

A village at the district's far south end, with parking for those starting the trail to Naufragados Beach.

Houses and church.

The reason to walk slowly through the village.

Azorean houses

The central architectural ensemble is protected by a 1975 municipal law. Sources describe attached houses, many in shades of pink, with colorful windows and lace curtains.

Nossa Senhora da Lapa church

The parish seat, on Praça Hermínio Silva. Sources give 1806 as the inauguration and describe stone, lime and whale oil brought from Armação.

The church's construction is told in different ways (started 1763, finished 1806). So we state only what sources share: the 1806 inauguration.

Oysters and a waterfront stroll.

The main reason to go.

  • Oyster Route: this is how Rodovia Baldicero Filomeno is known. Dozens of seafood restaurants line it, several with decks over the water.
  • Freshness: the south bay has calm water and good conditions for farming, and the work is passed down through generations, usually by family producers.
  • Walking: one source mentions about 5 km on foot from the church to the Caieira area. For most guests it is best to drive and walk short stretches.

We do not name specific restaurants because they change. Every loft has a full kitchen, but Ribeirão's oysters are worth going out for. See also our article Cocina propia para ahorrar en Campeche (in Spanish) to balance your budget.

Sunset over the bay.

The shore faces west.

Sunset

Being on the west coast, the district watches the sun set over the bay. The wooden deck and the waterfront, from the small squares to the restaurants, are spots to watch it in the late afternoon.

Naufragados Beach

The trail starts at Caieira and is about 2 km, according to one source. It is a preserved beach.

Ribeirão is an outing for scenery, food and sunset, with the calm bay in front. For a beach day, Campeche Beach, 150 m from the inn, is your best bet.

Getting there from Campeche.

It is the other side of the island: plan with room to spare.

  • Distance and time: about 20 minutes by car without traffic, on roads that wrap around the south and west of the island. One source places the district about 36 km from downtown Florianópolis.
  • Road: Rodovia Baldicero Filomeno is a single-lane road and can be slow on weekends and holidays, when restaurants fill up.
  • Summer: season traffic changes everything. Leave earlier and, if you can, go on a weekday.
  • Late afternoon: arrive before sunset to see the waterfront calmly and have dinner there.

To plan your route and timing, use the trip planner (in Portuguese).
